STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A local non-profit organization and a developer celebrated the opening of a new Port Richmond affordable housing complex this week.

The location at the intersection of Castleton and Port Richmond avenues will contain 48 units — 31 permanent supportive units, 16 affordable units for households earning 60% of the area median income, and one unit for the building super.

“Today’s ribbon-cutting is a testament to our commitment to building affordable housing and providing supportive services for all New Yorkers,” Marlee Busching-Truscott, Development Director of Hudson Companies, said. “We take great pride in developing much-needed affordable housing and providing critical social services for families in Staten Island

Funding for the development at 1546 Castleton Ave. was provided through the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) Supportive Housing Loan Program, low-income housing tax credits from HPD syndicated by Richman Housing Resources, construction debt from JP Morgan Chase, and permanent financing from Merchants Bank.

Representatives from those organizations, along with Assemblyman Charles Fall (D-North Shore) and former Councilwoman Debi Rose, attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the affordable housing development on Tuesday.

Work at the site of the $27 million project began in 2019 with the demolition of the former building at the location.

At the new site, Project Hospitality will operate a ground-floor community center and provide residents with on-site supportive services, including employment assistance, educational opportunities, and physical and emotional benefits.

“Project Hospitality is incredibly proud of this joint venture to bring affordable and supportive housing to State Island,” said Jaclyn Stoll, executive director of Project Hospitality. “This building is not just bricks and mortar; it’s a cornerstone of hope, a foundation for dreams, and a testament to the mission of [Project Hospitality}, which strives to ensure every individual has a place to call home.”
